'V-48Hours' 2009

Thu May 14, 2009, 5:43 AM
  • Mood: Mesmerized
  • Listening to: Lemon Jelly - In The Bath
  • Reading: Altered Carbon
  • Watching: Star Trek
  • Playing: Cyberpunk
  • Eating: Too much.
  • Drinking: Tea
All done. Well, more or less.

This year the random elements were:
Prop - A rock
Line - "It doesn't fit"
Character - Alex Puddle, and exaggerator
Genre - Family Movie

Friday Night
Panic as the genre and details are delayed due to network problems. Details eventually arrive, and panic continues. Family Movie! ARGH! That's a hard one.
Assemble in team HQ and begin the writing. Plot slowly forms, scripting begins. Maori language support arrives in the form of Tengaruru, head of the college Maori department.
Script ready by 10pm. Props list developing and getting huge.
Over to labs to use CeltX software for production management. Fell into hedge at 1:45am in the dark and ripped trousers leaving building. Ho hum.

Saturday
Up at 0445 to get kit ready and review shooting script. realise that there is too much to get done so re-write a section.
0600 start loading car, have breakfast.
0700 Producer and I meet in HQ as support crew arrive and begin preparation. Cast arrive at 0800 except for one who we need first. Typical. Make-up and wardrobe begin, shot planning continues.
0915 missing cast member arrives and we get his scene shot. Off into town to shoot at local mall. First time a 48Hours team has gotten permission to film there.
1015 Onto coastal walkway. Beautiful waves and high-tide lead to dramatic shots. Maori language coaching of cast proceeds well.
1100 Back to base for lunch and make-up adjustment then off to main location at 1230
1300 Set for shoot.
1500 light starting to drop, weather looks dodgy, hurry to finish this scene
1535 Main location in the can and off to finish location
1600 ready to roll at finish location. Cast struggle through paddock in the name of art.
1615 Helicopter team arrive. RC chopper with mount that was built for me. Alas too much vibration. Need to re-assess this technology.
1630 Final scene underway, light lost by 1700
1720 Clear-up and return to base.
1800 Pizza arrives. Catering team doing a wonderful job. Take a breather.
1900 Begin downloading video.
2030 Video completed and converting
2130 HORROR! Sound seems to be on only one channel, despite monitor indicating a stereo signal when recording.
2135 Even worse, what sound we have seems to be dropping out at random.
2300 Edit underway, rough cut 75% complete. Sound a BIG worry. Production team liaise and decide to complete rough cut and do a full ADR in the morning. Panic building

Sunday
0230 Edit 95% complete, off to bed
0500 Up to take cast member back to location for dawn shoot and pickups.
0700 Cast informed of ADR needs
0800 Begin ADR recordings. Send 2nd unit out for foley
1100 ADR recording and foley complete
1105 Discover original sound track restored, as if by magic. None of the team, even the support guru have any idea what is going on with it.
1115 Begin final edit pass. Agree title for the film. Te Hararei - The Holiday.
1400 Music crew arrive and take rough cut for scoring
1500 Final cut tied down, music crew begin final scoring and recording.
1515 Maori language check over and ready for subtitles.
1630 Music arrives and is laid down. Despite our best efforts, right audio channel not active for dialogue. Weird - even stereo mirror makes no difference.
1700 Complete cut and mix, begin output. Aware this took nearly two hours last year...
1710 Against all expectation, output completed in ten minutes. Edit and production team standing around scratching heads.
1715 Decide to put this copy aside in case of later cock-ups and begin re-laying audio.
1745 New audio track complete. Hit output. Estimates 2.5 hours to render. Consensus is to scrap that and hand in what we have.
1750 Handed in.
1755 Keel over.

And that is how it went. Now to make a director's cut...

On the thin ice of modern life

Don't be surprised when a crack in the ice
Appears under your feet...
